Multiple Attacks

this is an optional, but recommended, rule

If the alien has multiple attacks the referee and player should consider rationalizing the attack types and attack damage amounts.

Rationalizing Attack Types

When an alien has more than one attack per unit she is a more dangerous foe, and ranged attacks are more dangerous than melee attacks. A Gigantic alien with 4 Shoot attacks would be egregiously dangerous, but more importantly not very organic in nature. Most biologic creatures with multiple attacks have multiple different attacks for different situations. It is also more fun if an alien has a collection of attack types. The most famous would be a dragon that breathes fire, or slashes her claws.

The automation tools have a simple (when written in Python) mechanism for rationalizing attack types by attack frequency. The goal is not to nerf the player’s precious alien killing machine, but to make her more organic and play friendly.

Rationalizing Attack Damage

As with attack type rationalization damage amounts can also be corrected. This makes for a more balanced and interesting player persona. The process for rationalizing alien damage per attack is simple-ish. The player steps down the damage chart in size per attack type that the alien has. The choice in step down is arbitrary and the player may prefer a different order.

Example Rationalization

A Large alien with a 15 Strength has a Shoot Type attack and 5 attacks per unit is getting it’s butt rationalized. The player rolls a 3 for attack type rationalization for "Sh, Sh, Fl, Fl, St". This indicates two shoot attacks, two fling attacks and one strike attack. The damage rationalization table yields "1) 3d10, 2) d20, 3) d12". First attack (Shoot) is 3d10, second attack (Fling) is 1d20 and the third attack (Strike) is 1d12. Altering how these elements are valued is up to the player and referee. Remember that game balance is a key part of fun for all players involved.

An Attack Sentence

After many rounds of alien arena it was determined that making an "attack sentence" was very helpful. This aliens attack sentence would be 2 shoot attacks for 3d10, 2 fling attacks for 1d20 and 1 strike attack for 1d12. A very very dangerous alien indeed.
